Despacito was a track from the year 2017 released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It became the top popular streamed song across the globe within six months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music has not just brought interest to reggaeton, but also brought attention towards Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 included four mostly Spanish songs from 2016 compared with two for 2015. But during the peak of Despacito's fame in the year 2017 there were 19 mostly Spanish tracks which made it into the top 100. Then in 2020 the number was 41. Following the time that Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together on MIA (2018), while Madonna joined forces with Maluma for Medellin, 2019 By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about its inclination towards mainstream. However, a younger generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, sought to keep reggaeton evolving. Rauw Alejandro incorporated elements of other styles and electronic music.
